Hypnotism A Powerful Tool For Self-Improvement

Hypnotism refers to a technique in which one person gives suggestions to another. The suggestions are designed to affect the behavior of the latter. The person delivering the suggestions is called a hypnotist and the receiver is called the subject. The suggestions are usually positive since it has been determined that subjects do not accept suggestions that are contrary to their beliefs. The term self-hypnosis is used if the same person is both hypnotist and subject.

It is well known that the human mind is susceptible to suggestions and will act on them long after they were made. Advertisers spend large sums to suggest to readers and viewers that they should purchase their products. Their success is proof that the mind does respond to suggestions.

A hypnotist draws on this tendency to “respond to suggestions” to achieve both mental and physical self-improvement in a subject. The technique has been used for centuries in many cultures. The “medicine men” of primitive tribes still use the power of suggestion today.

In modern times, hypnotists improve the responses of subjects by first placing them in a relaxed state of mind. Studies have shown that the active brain generates electrical impulses at a frequency of fourteen to thirty-two cycles per second. This has been described as the “Beta” state. When relaxed, the frequency of the impulses drops to seven to fourteen cycles per second. This is called the “Alpha” state. There are also Theta and Delta states. The Theta state, four to seven cycles per second, is associated with drowsiness. The Delta state, three to five cycles per second occurs during sleep.

We have seen that advertisers have success in giving suggestions to subjects in the Beta state. Could hypnotists have even greater success with subjects in the more relaxed states? The answer should be obvious. However, there is no consensus on the optimum frequency for self-improvement suggestions. It is likely that the optimum range may include the lower frequencies of the Alpha state and upper frequencies of the Theta state.

Within this range there are three subdivisions. The first is labeled Simple. Here, the subject only responds to simple suggestions, is conscious and remembers everything after the session. The next subdivision is labeled Intermediate. The subject responds to more complicated suggestions but is still conscious and remembers everything after the session. Finally, there is the Complete subdivision. The subject is totally unaware of what transpires and remembers nothing upon awakening. Results will be achieved in any of these stages. This is, perhaps, contrary to common belief that only subjects in the “complete” stage realize benefits.

Many people only associate the term hypnosis with the complete stage. They believe that only subjects in this stage can realize the benefits of the technique. This is not correct. Subjects in any of the three stages will achieve results. This is important information for those who practice or intend to practice self-hypnotism.
