The Hardest Part is to Start

July 7, 2010 in Self Improvement by Noel

The toughest part of any new project isn’t the planning or mapping out of what you need to do. It is taking the first step and putting it into action. Taking the first step in any new enterprise is the most challenging part.

A project manager report that I read recently analyzed the reasons why projects fail. The number one cause was lack of implementation. People would plan a project but never put it into action. It failed because it was never started. It is the same in the rest of our lives. However much we plan, unless we take the first step and put our intentions into action we will never get anywhere.

Procrastination affects us all and never more than when we are about to embark on a challenging new project. We can find ourselves cleaning out odd corners of the house that we normally overlook, filing obscure papers or alphabetizing our CD collections.

Starting seems so hard because we are dealing with our fear of the unknown. We are overwhelmed by doubts and uncertainty. We fear getting it wrong or not knowing the right thing to do. All these fears can be cured by action. Action defeats fear. If fear is stopping you from embarking on a project you’ve planned out, the secret is to take action. Any action, however small will do. Once you start moving forwards, even a tiny amount, the fear diminishes and lets you get started.

If you find yourself scrubbing out the sink with a toothbrush to avoid your project, take a deep breath. Find one small action, anything at all related to your project and just do it. Once you do you will start building momentum, one action at a time and that momentum will keep you going.

Something else that can help is to ask a friend or family member or a coach to be your accountability partner. Report to them at intervals on your progress. You are far more likely to keep moving forward when you have committed to make a certain amount of progress to your friend or to a coach. Some of my clients employ me just to do that, so that they keep on track. It works for them.
